Going Green: Competitive Advantage or Corporate Cost?
Sustainability: it’s has become, of late, a corporate buzzword. The idea that we as humans have an effect on the health of our planet’s ecosystem—and, therefore, that we share a great responsibility—is no longer a fringe belief. In 2007, it’s rare to find a business that hasn’t announced a “green initiative.” And while some of these companies may simply be trying out a new PR angle, attempting to cash in on the latest media fad, corporate leaders with vision have come to realize that saving the Earth can also save them money, and that by investing in the future of their planet, they are also investing in their company’s future. But what about the costs? Will increased regulation deprive the business sector of the profits they will need to develop cleaner technologies? Is it even possible to meet the demands of the market while meeting the demands of a planet in peril? The CEO Dialogues presented by THE WEEK and The Conference Board set forth to answer these questions. Sponsored by EDS with support from Lufthansa, the CEO Dialogues brought together a few of the world's most renowned CEOs to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of going green in a corporate society.
