Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria, which is slated to start on Tuesday, Reuters reports. The decision was made during a meeting with the defense minister on Monday, with Putin saying that Russia's military intervention in the nation had largely met its objectives. Syrian President and Russian ally Bashar al-Assad has reportedly been informed by the Kremlin of the decision.

The move comes as the Syrian government and opposition groups arrived in Geneva Monday to begin United Nations-backed talks.
