You may not be surprised to learn that John Edwards is “a big fat shameless liar who thinks you’re stupid,” said Jim Geraghty in National Review Online. After “insisting” on national TV last year that he could not be the father of ex-mistress Rielle Hunter’s daughter, Frances, new reports say he is about to acknowledge his paternity.

This would probably be a much smaller story, said Ron Chusid in Liberal Values, if Edwards had been smart enough to admit “everything once his affair with Rielle Hunter was confirmed.” But he made things worse for himself by denying everything, which guaranteed “a steady stream of news items” as evidence trickled out, like Wednesday’s National Enquirer report of a secret DNA test proving his paternity.

Once the details did start coming, said Allahpundit in Hot Air, after the Enquirer dragged “big media” to the story “kicking and screaming,” it became that “rare scandal where pretty much everything was exactly what it looked like and played out exactly as you’d expect.” Edwards is the father, he apparently paid “hush money” to hide that fact, and "the dominoes began falling” when the money stopped and his “fall guy,” Andrew Young, started to squeal.

Rielle Hunter isn’t blameless in this, said Rita Watson in Examiner.com. She apparently “believed she had a future with John,” and these days a “love child” is rarely a mistake and “nearly always deliberate or deceptive.” But after Rick Pitino’s abortion payment, Jude Law’s new baby, and “let’s not even talk about Mel Gibson’s girlfriend”, there’s a bigger question: Don’t Edwards and his fellow big shots “know how to condom-up?”

Posted by Joyce, Friday, August 14, 2009, 8:21 am Who didn't see this coming? In my opinion, Edwards never stood a chance. Rielle saw him as her meal ticket and went for it. She was out there floundering around, and along comes Edwards with deep pockets. Men are sometimes even more stupid and gullible than women. I wonder what's going to happen with the Mrs. now? She seems to be in lala land too. None of these cast of characters seems able to face the true reality. I guess I feel the worst for Edwards' children. Good dad one day, scoundrel the next!

Posted by Fran, Friday, August 14, 2009, 9:18 am Edwards had a choice and don't believe for one minute that he didn't have a chance. I wish women would stop excusing men's behavior by pretending that men are dumb and therefore, not responsible for what happens. Rielle didn't rape him. He went willingly and knew what was happening. Both are guilty. She may have looked at Edwards as her meal ticket, but she couldn't have taken it to the next level without his assistance.

Posted by Johnny Reb, Friday, August 14, 2009, 9:25 am Jesus ever lovin christ...WHO CARES!?!?!? John Edwards IS NOT NEWS anymore...hard to argue he ever was at this point. The only reason this is news at all is because the mainstream media finds it easier to torment this man and his poor family rather than focus on real issues like health care, terrorism and what a collosal failure Obama has been. He cheated on his spouse. Thousands of people do it every day. This time, just like all those others, is just between the familes involved.

Posted by Johnny Reb, Friday, August 14, 2009, 9:29 am BTW, just to play devil's advocate here, in regard to John's denial he was the father, it's entirely possible that when he made that statement that he believed he was not the father. Rielle Hunter is not exaclty a virgin, people.

Posted by Tommy Holiday, Friday, August 14, 2009, 10:07 am Having some first hand experience in this area let me say that the best thing is to come 100 clean acknowledge all the children involved. Acknowledge the pain you have caused. Try to have the best relationship possible with all your children and their mothers. If things are going rough remember that some things just take time always leave a door open you'd be surprised who might walk through it 2,5, or 10 years later. The guys who go into attack/denial/lie mode are not men.

Posted by Vickie, Friday, August 14, 2009, 10:29 am RH victimize another woman and her family because she's an over the hill, never been, who wanted attention and a meal ticket. The collateral damage in this affair is amazing. Who cares if JE fathered this baby anymore. He denied her for 18 mos. and she will always know that. Karma will get these two. I hope it isn't in the form of child being just like her mother. This poor baby doesn't have a chance and EE doesn't have any responsibility to this child. This is JE's child of adultery.Media, don't give these people any more time.

Posted by Nellio, Friday, August 14, 2009, 10:35 am Edwards had said he couldn't possibly be the father because the affair was over by then which was during his wife's cancer relapse. Well, now one way he could explain away the timing discrepancy is that Hunter must have taken one of his used condoms, stored the sperm, and later on artificially insemenated herself. That way, he never had sex with that woman during his wife's cancer, but he still is the father of a child conceived during that period. And, just imagine, he could have been our VP or President. What a tragic waste.

Posted by Johnny Reb, Friday, August 14, 2009, 10:36 am Vickie, I have to disagree with you on something: As I said, Rielle Hunter is a world class floozy and John may not have known the child was his. Evidence: What reason would he have had to lie about it? The affair was public knowlede, his career over, the damage done. If the kid was his and he knew it that info was going to come out eventually, so why deny it? I honestly believe he didn't know the kid was his. I do agree with you on a couple other things: Who cares if the kid is his and the media certainly needs to get off this.
