How the action 'mogul' handles this 'animated apocalypse' movie

Look out, parents, said Linda Winer in Newsday.com, "Jerry Bruckheimer might just own your children." The action movie "mogul" has joined forces with Disney to "concoct" G-Force, "a live action/animated apocalypse entertainment with equal parts high-tech violent gadgetry and soft-fur anthropomorphism"—the latter in the form of genetically engineered "rodent super-spies" set forth to save the world. Sam Rockwell, Tracy Morgan, Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, and Steve Buscemi provide the voices and "find the beating heart beneath the crashing and the chasing and the banging." G-Force may "feature a bunch of cute, talking guinea pigs," said Michael Rechtshaffen in The Hollywood Reporter, but that didn't stop Bruckheimer from serving up a "loud and proud, precisely programmed, turbo-powered thrill ride." But the "furry characters are flatly run-of-the-treadmill," and the movie doesn't "allow viewers young or old to invest" in them "to any satisfying or lasting degree."
G-Force also "trips over its plot and spends lots of time unloading bad pop culture references," said Matt Pais in Metromix Chicago. It's an "enjoyably absurd" movie, but it's "pretty stupid." It also happens to be "a better action movie than Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen—but that's like raving that sandwiches taste better than the bottom of your shoe."
