The campaign to fire David Letterman

David Letterman on The Late Show (CBS)

Best opinion: Huffington Post, Big Hollywood, Wash. Post

Republicans are sinking to a new low, said George Schlatter in The Huffington Post. "The party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt used to fight for big ideas and causes"—now a handful of conservatives seem content to use their political muscle to try to get David Letterman fired for a "silly joke" or two about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. The anti-Letterman outrage is ridiculous, especially since conservatives like comedian Dennis Miller and Fox News host Sean Hannity say plenty of offensive things about President Obama.

If David Letterman had any sense, said Michael S. Rulle Jr. in Big Hollywood, he wouldn't stick around long enough to be fired. He "should just walk off the set." The host of CBS' "Late Show" is not funny anymore. Judging by his unnecessary attack on Sarah Palin and her teenage daughters, the realization that his time has passed makes Letterman "very angry."

David Letterman's "slutty flight attendant" remark about Sarah Palin was "in poor taste," said Kathleen Parker in The Washington Post, and his sexually suggestive remark about Palin's under-age daughter was far worse. He should apologize, but trying to get him fired only creates an even bigger problem. "Calls for censorship or worse are far more dangerous to the land of the free than any inappropriate one-liner."

Posted by go4les, Monday, June 15, 2009, 2:28 pm Oh come on already... i can't believe how humorless everyone is do you not pay attention to the news or understand an erudite sense of humor? The jokes told about the daughter weren't meant to chastize Bristol they were meant to skewer Alex Rodriguez and Elliot Spitzer. Having said that, if you're going to be in the public spotlight, there are going to be jokes made about you. Deal with it. To the point Dave made in his apology, you don't hear ARod and Spitzer calling for contrition.

Posted by stan, Monday, June 15, 2009, 3:20 pm WHY don't ARod and Spitzer call for contrition? Chicken? Dave is old and it's time for CBS to spit out new talent. He's done and his attempts at humor are feeble, and I WAS a loyal viewer. He's boring, and should be canned just for his notalent performances, night after night. Not worth staying up for anymore. BYE, DAVE. and take sara with you. Didn't Dave KNOCK UP HIS GIRLFRIEND?

Posted by Alyce, Monday, June 15, 2009, 3:24 pm Hmmm... doesn't these CENSORSHIP ideas sound lame, when the same people called for Don Immus to get fired? Come on ... Dave's mom needs to publicly wash his mouth with soap, and then send him to his room for the next 20 years, if he still has 20 more years. he's pretty old, isn't he? YES, dave knocked up his girlfriend. wait until the kid hears all about it in day care. Yes, it's LONG PAST time for dave to be put out of pasture. byebye, is right. he's just boring, and not funny.

Posted by Brett, Monday, June 15, 2009, 3:38 pm Don Imus said something derogatory about an entire group of people. Letterman made jokes regarding a specific public official. Can you start to see the huge difference between the two now?!? Had Letterman made jokes about W's daughters, I doubt we would be hearing all of this phony outrage because conservatives no longer like George W. Sarah's just trying to bolster her conservative credentials by making a big deal out of nothing at all, but it obviously works in a certain crowd! Letterman's happy because his ratings are up, too.

Posted by Jerry Friedman, Monday, June 15, 2009, 4:19 pm Stupid people like Letterman talk through their asses and asses, like so many other people can not stop jumping up and down. Hey! Everyone get a grip. Demos say bad things about Repubs and am talkshow guys say stupid things about everyone, esp. Demos. That is where we are so this is to be expected. Yeah, it shows how stupid things are. So? You didn't that before this? Keep cool and watch your garden grow.

Posted by Tim Lawrence, Monday, June 15, 2009, 4:33 pm So the big moose hunter from Alaska who has no problem using high powered rifles to kill moose and such but.....has problems with someone making a couple of jokes about her 14yr. old getting preggoHMMMM..I wonder if Palin ever gave any thought that if she had been more involved in her daughters life ,whereabouts, who she is seeing,ETC....she wouldnt be a grandmother right now!...I am so tired of political correctness!..People make jokes all the time about all kinds of things and people...If you cant take a joke dont be in the public eye!

Posted by JB, Monday, June 15, 2009, 5:45 pm Throughout her life, Sarah Palin has proven constant on one thing she will do say anything to get into the public eye. I don't know why the press plays along with her.Sarah Palin is a bore, she's yesterday's papers, and I'll be glad to see the end of her her end is the best feature, nyuk nyuk.

Posted by Emily Brothers, Monday, June 15, 2009, 7:36 pm I have counseled victims of sexual abuse and bullying. Letterman's remarks about the child are threatening and demeaning. It is wounding to her spirit. It is like a beating. And speaking of beating....are Flight Attendants speaking out against being called slutty?Emily
