Frontline: The Old Man and the Storm
Before Hurricane Katrina, Herbert Gettridge had 300 family members living within a few minutes of the house he built decades ago in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward. The storm scattered them far and wide, part of a diaspora 1 million strong—but octogenarian Gettridge returned to his house and lived there without electricity, gas, or water, determined to restore it so his wife could return. As it follows his struggle, Frontline explores why hardly any of the billions of dollars in promised recovery funds has reached residents. The film also paints a compelling portrait of a determined spirit standing up not only to the fury of nature but to the pernicious forces of bureaucratic inertia and indifference.
