Is a gay interpretation of the Bible necessary, or just provocative?

A gay version of the Bible

It’s no surprise that this news has “provoked upset among Christians,” said Alison Flood in the Guardian. American filmmaker Max Mitchell recently announced that his film production company, Revision, will publish “a gay version of the Bible, in which God says it is better to be gay than straight.” It’s to be called the Princess Diana Bible—supposedly named because of her good deeds—and Revision will “adapt and direct the revised Bible as a two-part mini-series, The Gay Old Testament and The Gay New Testament.”

This is clearly “inspired by a political agenda,” said Douglas Howe in Beliefnet, “and one person's desire to contort not only the text but the very context of it to suit his own perspective.” This is part of the problem with our culture: It’s “growing more and more confused about the difference between text and context, between story and standard, between art and history.”

If Christians are angry now, said Queerty, “wait ’til they find out that the Princess Diana Bible isn't even the first queeny-King of Kings Bible out there.” Last year, the Gay Bible was published, and it contains “many heretical things about letting gay people love each other and not mindlessly following scripture like a lemming.” But for what it’s worth, “sitting down and ‘turning the Bible gay’ is a pretty stupid use” of time.

Especially since the “Bible we already have is very pro-gay,” said Candace Chellew-Hodge in Religion Dispatches, despite what anti-gay people say. “There is absolutely no condemnation for loving, committed, gay and lesbian relationships within the pages of the Bible.” The gay and lesbian community needs to “make peace” with the Bible we already have, and everyone needs to realize that the real message of the Bible is that “God loves us all—no matter what.”

Posted by Lisa, Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 9:07 pm I'm confused. The Bible has lots of verses decrying homosexual behavior. However, I'm mainly in favor of telling the truth. You make your own consequences when you put down honesty.

Posted by chris, Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 9:33 pm I think you have the bible misintrepretated as the message is that God abominates the act of homosexuality (both gay and lesbian), and that he loves the person, but hates thy sin. It's extremley mind boggling for Christians when non-christians throws in their own intrepretations, especially when they do not have the facts.

Posted by RCS, Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 11:23 pm A few extracts would be helpful. Better would be link to whole of it.

Posted by tim, Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 2:13 pm I think the previous writers got the gist of what the Bible is about. However, let's rmemeber that it is the revealed "Word of God". It is not be substituted, rewritten or considered "one interesting and important book." It is THE book. As to homosexuality, the other writers were right. The Bible never condemns homosexuals. The Bible condemns sin of which one sin are homosexual acts (as is adultry). Let's keep a Christian and Jewish perspective here!

Posted by Jeremy, Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 2:45 pm A gay Quran would be a lot more entertaining...

Posted by Chris, Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 5:51 pm I'm all for freedom of speech and freedom for people to choose how they want to live their lives, but this is a complete mockery of God and the Bible. I am no currently a practicing Christian but I have to say that this is the most rediculous thing I have heard in a while. The bible does condem the act of homosexuality, but God still loves the poeple and wants them to know and believe in Him. Also, for those that say that there is nothing in the Bible that condems the act of homosexuality, remember that is one of the reasons for the destruction of Sodom and Gamorah. The jist of this though is I don't care how you choose to live your life, but don't tell me I'm wrong if I choose to be straight.

Posted by Alexandra, Thursday, December 4, 2008, 2:25 pm Um, never mind about the WARNINGS about taking away from and adding to the Word of God, right...? Stick with the KING JAMES (AV1611). It's the only accurate English translation today.

Posted by AbbyLadybug, Thursday, December 4, 2008, 6:00 pm Unbelievable! The Bible we already have is very ANTI-gay. At least, it talks about [the act of] homosexuality as an abomination to the Lord. Literally. (The Bible doesn't, however, teach us to hate gay people. Just wanted to make that clear.) Why take something so sacred and twist it to mean what you want it to mean? Just start a new religion or something! Making a "Princess Diana" version of the Bible really IS a waste of time. And I won't waste any more time commenting. But I do wonder, why is it called the Princess Diana Bible? SHE wasn't gay, was she? Just curious...
