Sarah Palin’s Turkeygate
How Palin’s light-hearted turkey pardon went sour

Well, Sarah Palin has done it again, said Andrew Sullivan in The Atlantic online. In an attempt at some Thanksgiving levity, Palin pardoned a turkey—the only problem was that, while addressing Alaskans from a farm in Wasilla, another turkey was being slaughtered in the background. (Watch Letterman’s take) The cameraman claims that he told Palin about the gruesome backdrop and she said, “No worries.” But “wack-job” Palin “is once again denying reality” and “calling the photographer a liar.”
Who cares? said Jim Newell in Wonkette. All she did was film a goofy TV segment, which was even funnier because of the accidental turkey-death background. This should give rise to “harmless humor” instead of the typical “gotcha” journalism that has ensued. And why is Palin lying about this? “When anything is covered up, it becomes a scandal”—she should know this by now.
Turkeygate isn't important because we expect Palin to be squeamish or remorseful about turkeys dying, said the Alaskan commentary site Mudflats. It's important because it shows how much Palin exists in her own bubble. “The critical step of imagining the scene from another’s perspective was completely missing.” She couldn't imagine that there might be viewers—small children, for example—who don't want to see a turkey murdered. If a politician's job is to represent her constituents, what does this say about Palin?

Posted by John, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 11:54 am You people are stupid, this is so not a big deal. The guy from the turkey farm even said he didn't know he was in the shot. All that aside even if it would have been real then what's the big deal. Do you all really believe your turkey just grows inside the delli? LOL MSNBC with their little girly men crying about it, but yet I don't see anyone shedding a tear about the aborted babies. crying over Turkey's but Pro-Choice.RIIGGHHTT!
Posted by ericmiami, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 12:35 pm Dang, John. Do you know someone is posting really stupid comments and signing your name?
Posted by Jim, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 12:42 pm Yes...a turkey was MURDERED right behind her! ha ha ha ha that is the funniest thing I've heard. But, it IS ok for our kids to watch CSI on public television but not know that on thanksgiving they actually had to "murder" the turkey before they ate it. It is really best to keep our children in the dark, that they think the cows and racoons and turkeys actually have good conversation about life and how things are going with no word of where there hamburger came from...bring back the old life where kids knew that hamburger came from a cow and that cow was slaughtered so they could eat it....
Posted by Darklady, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 12:56 pm So watching an animal die is entertainment for America now. I've been unimpressed by how vegans and vegetarians latched onto this to chide meat eaters -- and I've been even more unimpressed by some meat eaters who seem to think that we should relish the sight of animals dying. When the fleeting sight of Janet Jackson's nipple shield is an "obscenity" but the death throes of animals are family entertainment then the message is clear: our priorities are out of whack.
Posted by Trey, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 1:37 pm It's amazing that this is even used against Palin. You people need more to report on than this nonsense. Palin can be criticized for this, while the leftist users of this site cry out because of this week's editorial. I wonder if some of you are among the aforementioned posters. Ridiculous.
Posted by LittleRedBird, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 1:43 pm Oh, come on. It was just plain hilarious! She's giving her rambling answer and the turkey is bleeding out in bin behind her. That's just funny. Hooray for bad camera placement!
Posted by Alaskan, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 3:20 pm The interview is hilarious. How could she NOT know what was going on behind her?!? She truly that clueless?!? Gotcha Media.................LOL
Posted by Alan Vaile, Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 3:35 pm I think what this demonstrates is Palin's lack of capable staff. Surely the governor's office has a professional media expert who is by her side whenever the TV cameras are present? A media expert who PLANS these events? If not, shame on Palin! If true, shame on Palin (for hiring incompetents)!
