Now we’ve heard everything, said the blog Holy Moly! Some “money-grabbing songwriter” in England named Mark Archer is trying to develop a musical based on the life story of soccer superstar David Beckham. “What planet is this man on?” At least we can take comfort in the fact that “we’ll have the last laugh” when Archer “doesn’t sell the six billion tickets he’s predicting.”

Yes, it is kind of ridiculous that someone wants to make a musical about a soccer star and “part-time underwear model,” said the blog Socialite Life. But who are we to talk? “Here in the States, we went and made Legally Blonde into a Broadway production”—it doesn’t get much more absurd than that.

There’s actually nothing absurd about a David Beckham musical, said Henry Winter in the Telegraph. “England supporters adore Beckham because he has fought back from adversity,” saved his team, and “shown he cares about the shirt.” Add to that his “reported tensions with his father” and the fact that he’s married to Posh Spice, and “the stage represents a natural home” for him.
