Is it wrong to hold a beauty pageant exclusively for women who have had cosmetic surgery?

"I’m sure many a Miss America has gone under the knife," said Katie Drummond in True/Slant, but the "Hungarians are taking cosmetic 'enhancement' to a new level. They’ve actually got a crown and sash reserved especially for Miss Plastic Hungary." It's part of a push by Hungarian cosmetic surgeons to promote their industry—to be eligible, contestants have to prove they've had breast enhancement or other surgical "tweaks and tinkers" (watch an AP report on the Miss Plastic Hungary pageant).

How "degrading to women," said blogger Meg C. in Associated Content. It sends the wrong message to women everywhere to suggest that they need to resort to surgery to be beautiful. Besides, "Hungarian women already possess an exotic beauty, with high cheekbones and almond shaped eyes," why in the world would they need a plastic surgeon's help?

"Unnatural beauties" want to show off, too, said Nick Sabloff in The Huffington Post. The organizers of the Miss Plastic Hungary pageant—won by Reka Urban, 22—say they're just trying to show that "cosmetic corrections" aren't only about "oversized breasts, bulbous lips, and skin stretched to near tearing point." Plastic surgeon Dr. Tamas Rozsos said that plastic surgery has a "bad reputation" in Hungary, and the pageant is intended to show women there's no shame in "restoring harmony" to their looks.

Posted by Krissie, Tuesday, October 13, 2009, 2:57 pm This question is asked, in light of our fascination with Dr 90210, Nip Tuck, billions of dollars spent on beauty products, socalled movie stars who have everthing done, several times, and more??? Come on. Let them have some fun and strut their stuff. They paid enough for it. Who are WE to question this competition??? At least they will win on their and their doctor's accomplishments. BHO cannot say the same thing. He only had to think it and he won the Nobel prize. Perhaps Norway will consider the winning doctor for a prize. Makes as much sense

Posted by Joshua, Tuesday, October 13, 2009, 3:10 pm Just another exhibit at the Freak Show. Of course I'll watch it if they show any of it online. For the same reason I watch female or male bodybuilders who overextend their muscularity. Or US football steroid swilling monstrosities. Or any organized racing event NASCAR, Grand Prix, etc, which is for the accidents.Don't pretend these women or their doctors should be lauded in any way, though. They want to be something less than human. Let them. I want to see it! More entertainment at their expense. Good.

Posted by CH, Tuesday, October 13, 2009, 4:12 pm Nothing wrong with getting surgery to be, or at least feel, more beautiful. At least these women are admitting that they had some form of plastic surgery. Besides, it's time to admit that to a certain extent looks do matter even one's clothes can change the unconcious bias one has when seeing or meeting someone. Does the surgeon also get a prize?
