New York's cupcake ban

Will outlawing bake sales in schools help in the fight against obesity?

New York's cupcake ban

Don't try this in a New York school.

There's a new rule in New York City schools, said Jennifer Medina in The New York Times. "There shall be no cupcakes." The city's Education Department has outlawed baked goods on campus under a new wellness policy seeking to "limit how much sugar and fat students put in their bellies at school."

"Yes, it is for the children," said Don Surber in the Charleston, W.V., Daily Mail. "It is always for the children. Guns are bad for kids. Old books with lead paint are bad for kids. Cupcakes are bad for kids. You know what is really bad for kids? The Nanny State."

Fighting "skyrocketing obesity" in our children is a worthy goal, said Maureen Downey in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, but turning schools into "no cupcake zones" isn't the answer. All that does is eliminate bake sales—which are a proven way for clubs and athletic teams to raise quick cash. What good will that do "in high schools where kids can leave school and get their own fries?"

Posted by MWhitcomb, Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 12:43 pm Not just NY city schools. Update schools are following suit. No more food of any kind at a birthday party in my son's school.

Posted by Mitzi, Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 2:04 pm Cupcake and birthday cake ban? Stupid. What happened to kids running and playing OUTSIDE, not infront of Wii. It isn't so much what they are putting in their mouths, but more what they are NOT doing. Running. Playing. Using their imaginations to play outside. Today's parents and kids just don't get it, do they? BO could encourage kids to run, hike, play. THAT he could probably propose and get it approved. He's in STALL MODE with every one of his policies for change, so this one might pass! THIS, BO, is change we need and want.

Posted by Nancy, Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 2:09 pm Let me get this clear. Kids bring guns to class. Kids get into fights and kill each other. Kids terrorize teachers and bus drivers, and other kids. Kids don't have to pass tests anymore to move up to the next grade. BUT, KIDS CANNOT HAVE CUPCAKES AND BIRTHDAY CAKES BECAUSE CAKES MAKE THEM FAT??? That is so stupid. The NYC education department should be beamed with monthold cupcakes. Time to take back our country and our schools from these nuts. It is NOT the cake, dummies. Get the kids to MOVE, not side and vegetate. DUMB ADMINISTRATORS.

Posted by Tomas, Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 2:12 pm You mean SIT AND VEG, right? Agree. Tell the edu boards to MIND THIER OWN BUSINESS and EDUCATE THE KIDS. THAT IS THEIR JOB, not whether they eat cake or not. Remember Marie A, who said LET THEM EAT CAKE. Remember what happened to her? Well, time to do the same with the Edu Dept. Mind your own business and get tough on educating kids. Diet is not your business. This is unthinkable, and parents who allow this to continue are more stupid than their cake free kids. Fight back, for God's sake.

Posted by timlawNY, Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 6:49 pm What the heck is happening to us in this SUPPOSEDLY FREE country?...All these politicians and special interest groups seem to think that it is their right to try and control almost every thing we do!..WELL I for one am sick and tired of all these attacks on our personal freedoms and choices!..No cupcakes indeed!..STOP making all these assinine rules and laws and get back to the important things like JOBS.AFFORDABLE SAFE HOUSING,AND BRING OUR PEOPLE HOME FROM THESE SENSELESS WARS THAT WE DONT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO WIN!

Posted by Claudine, Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 8:26 pm My 7 year old daughter was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and the first day back to school after she got out of the hospital, a mom brought in cupcakes to celebrate her child's birthday after the teacher sent an email home about my daughter's diabetes. Another mom commented to me that she was glad that her daughter was not in my daughter's class. Apparently, the cupcake ritual is more important than a child's medical condition and emotional health! Hooray New York City!!! I wished that we lived there!!!!

Posted by venicementor, Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 8:57 pm Peanut butter sandwiches OUT Birthday cake OUT soda OUT allergies IN diabetes IN obesity IN I wonder how in heck I got to be the age I am now 62 with ten pounds above my High School weight of 118 I remember the good old days as a kid, when all this BS was not even considered let alone, a problem. What have we turned into? No one is responsible for a damned thing anymore take it away from everyone because you can't control it. GREAT sounds like the government for sure. Happy life folks! Know we are permanently F'd!
